2022 Kiama 7s - Report
What an awesome weekend away for the Moorabbin Rams Mens and Womens teams to Kiama 7s. Known as the biggest 7s in Australia it was celebrating its 50th anniversary with a total of 40 teams across men's and women's competing in different level Pools.
Our women's team played in the top competition and were placed in a pool with the best teams from around NSW. Our men's team were also given a tough draw and placed in a pool with last years winner and also the team that turned out to be this year’s Plate winners.
Women's Results
Lloyd McDermott Rugby 12 v Moorabbin 5
Burraneer 1 29 v Moorabbin 0
Manly Mermaids 20 vs Moorabbin 0
Men's Results
Manly 22 vs Moorabbin 7
West Harbour 14 vs Moorabbin 5
Parramatta Two Blues 22 vs Moorabbin 5
To have our teams participate in such an elite event against some of the best clubs in NSW was a great rugby experience. However, neither of our teams had played any lead up 7's tournament unlike the Shute shield teams who were playing their 4th NSWRU club 7s run competition. It gives us something to plan for ahead of the next trip to the Kiama 7's.
The weather was not friendly and conditions were the worst ever seen.....ankle deep mud which took our advantage away with several class steppers in our team unable to shine. However, we certainly weren't embarrassed against teams who had been to several played several tournaments prior.
An interesting side note was that Manly, who we had lost to, made the plate final beating top ACT club Gangahlin Eagles by 40 to 0.
Overall a huge thank you must go to the Club committee in supporting such a tour. To Sinoti Sinoti, Konisi Yabaki, all of our players boys and girls, Eddy Gumi and last but not least to Ben Welsh our physio who was non stop strapping both teams tending to injuries and doing most of it in the pouring rain......thanks mate.
Well done to everyone and lets all look forward to our upcoming season and any future 7's tournaments.
